The life you save may be your own

Wilderness survival training is currently unregulated. Anyone can claim to be an expert, without formal training of any kind, in any subject matter. That's why we are working with the same national certifying body that regulates search and rescue training to establish a nationally-recognized basic survival skills certification course.

This is a combination of our weekend critical skills intensive and wilderness first aid certification courses. It is a true training intensive with 10-hour training days covering a range of material. This course includes our wilderness survival skills certification and a nationally-recognized wilderness first aid certification.

ON THIS COURSE YOU GET TRAINING WITH:

  • Wilderness First Aid: Learn Wilderness First Aid (WFA) from a nationally certified WFA instructor and receive a WFA Certification at the end of the course
  • Exposure: Learn to recognize and treat exposure (hypo/hyperthermia)
  • Fire Making: Craft a bow and drill friction fire kit (fire with sticks), and other emergency fire-making techniques
  • Shelters: Construct a weatherproof survival shelter

Test your skills

**(3 Different Levels to choose from)**

Our field course is designed to give the student a taste of what a real world wilderness survival emergency can be like. The gear list is minimal, pocketknife/water bottle/pack, in order to reinforce the principles of improvisation and to force the participant to learn to use what is around them. You will leave with no food or water and will consume only what is found. The terrain can be extreme, with most of the hiking off trail. The hike will be anywhere from 2.5-5 miles each way. This course is about full immersion. The ability to endure harsh conditions and to "do without" and still perform is emphasized. Students will learn to overcome the unexpected.

ON THIS COURSE YOU GET TRAINING WITH:

  • Shelter Making: Construct a survival shelter from scratch.
  • Water Purification: Locate and treat water.
  • Fire Making: Make a fire with sticks
  • First Aid: Improvised first aid
  • Trap Making: Construct a primitive trap from scratch
  • Rope Making: Learn to make cordage from wild materials (string/rope)
  • Signaling: Learn to signal rescuers in an emergency
  • Plant Identification
  • Navigation
  • ...and much more

Field Course - Hardcore

(Just You vs. Nature)

  1. Daypack
  2. Pocketknife or multitool with locking blade and saw
  3. Clothes that are appropriate for the weather and the outdoors (including close-toed shoes/hiking boots and long pants)
  4. 1-Full Water bottle (stainless steel, non-insulated)
  5. A headlamp/flashlight
  6. Work gloves for outdoor use
  7. Sun protection/bug spray
“This course puts everything in perspective, and I know I’ll enjoy all my activities at a whole new level. Tom is knowledgeable, supportive and firm. Happen to meet some instructor trainees as well, I’d say their quality is also top notch. Knowledge is empowering, which makes these courses addicting. Looking forward to additional courses. Great experience and great value. I’m recommending this school to all my outdoor friends, hardcore or not.”

When 911 is too far away

Come spend two days of extremely hands-on training in wilderness first aid (WFA) with us during our nationally-recognized certification course. WFA is different from standard first aid in that:

  • It can require extended care (24hrs+)
  • It can require you to improvise and create life-saving gear from your camping equipment and/or surroundings
  • It can require you to take exposure measures (care for the patient's needs in terms of warmth and cooling) into account
  • Training is very hands-on and involves many realistic-seeming simulations
  • Students perform a much higher level of medical intervention (i.e. students will learn to set certain dislocated joints, close wounds, and more)

Upon completion of this two day/16+ hour course, students earn a nationally-accepted certification from the American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) - the world's largest private EMS training provider.

“I have taken numerous first aid courses including a 4 day wilderness first aid course in the past. STSC’s Wilderness First Aid was, without question, the most comprehensive course on the subject I have ever taken.”

Healing with wild plants

"Apothecary" is an ancient term for those who produce healing remedies from raw materials. In times of old, local healers would go to the apothecary to obtain the healing "potions" they gave to their patients. This course takes you far beyond theory and deep into the world of plant processing. We will turn natural plants, oils, waxes, and more into a wide array of healing potions. You will make your own natural remedies and take them home at the end of the course.

*This course is essential if you wish to move beyond survival by learning to live off of the land.

ON THIS COURSE YOU GET TRAINING WITH:

  • Making your own healing balm/lotion
  • Making a medicinal poultice/plaster
  • Brewing a medicinal tea
  • Making a disinfecting rinse (oral and wounds)
  • Learning to harvest and "cure" wild herbs aka "wildcrafting"
To my knowledge there is no other school survival school in the nation that compares to STSC. As a student and a teacher myself I can always appreciate finding someone who actually knows something and can back it up with experience and intelligence.
